Has your calendar has been marked for February 15th since the holiday season? It’s the first holiday in about six weeks (not that we’re counting), and we’re here to make sure you get the very best out of Family Day! There’s so much family fun just waiting to be discovered in Surrey, and now it’s time to get planning. Whether your youngster is a nature-lover, or they have a soft spot for animals, there’s something for everyone this Family Day in Surrey.
For the animal lovers, discover exotic reptiles and animals at the Urban Safari Rescue Society. This rescue organisation is dedicated to teaching kids all about conservation and how important ecosystems (like Surrey’s) are. Take a tour of the facility (by appointment only) and meet some reptile friends.
Discover something new about your favourite park by going on a good old-fashioned geocache hunt. Choose your destination, download the Geocache app, follow the hints and find the hidden “treasure”. Open up your treasure, mark your name as a finder, and replace the treasure inside with a new gift for the next finder. Wrap your day of hunting up with a delicious take-out dinner from one of Surrey’s fabulous restaurants.
Keeping the kids active on a day off is a breeze in Surrey. The Coastal Climbing Centre hosts drop-in visits by reservation, where no experience is necessary, and kids can climb the walls (literally) with zero stress. Or head to Surrey’s Bad Axe Throwing and learn how to throw in a safe, welcoming environment. Basically, if you and your kids can lift an axe, they can teach you how to throw it. Book in advance or check for walk-in time slots. And for a good old-fashioned arcade experience, head to Central City Fun Park, Metro Vancouver’s largest indoor amusement park! They will be open on Family Day for mini-golf, roller skating, bowling and classic arcade games. Reservations are not required, but capacity is limited.
Surrey Civic Theatres is all about music this Family Day! Enjoy music time and bring the family together online to learn some songs on the piano and guitar that everyone can jam to at home. No instruments? No problem! You’ll also learn some basic vocal tricks to sing together in harmony. This family workshop runs on Monday, February 15 from 2pm – 3pm and is suitable for ages 7+. And watch an upbeat and fun video from Ruploops who show that anyone young or old can drop beats, make music and bust-a-move in a family dance party, with simple household objects that are secretly musical instruments.
Looking for something to do in the days leading up to Family Day? Sign up for a safe, one-hour visit to the Museum of Surrey and pick up a Mini Explorer kit at check-in. The kit has riddles about the outdoor Heritage Campus and a scavenger hunt of campus and indoor galleries. Once you’ve finished, show the front desk staff your completed hunt and receive a prize! If you’d rather do your scavenger hunt from the comfort of your own home, print the online Exploration Discovery Sheets and do the hunt via a virtual tour of the museum. Or join a costumed guide and take a virtual tour of the Historic Stewart Farmhouse and Outbuildings. Ask questions and learn about this unique historic site. Register online or by calling 604-591-4627. The farm has lots of other fun ideas for celebrating Family Day at home as well, like baking Mrs. Stewarts favourite chocolate chip cookies, designing a family flag or pick up a take-home craft kit containing materials and instructions to create a wooden spinning top and a hand-sewn bean bag.
Have you always wanted to book a hotel pool just for your family? The Ramada Langley Surrey has a fabulous Family Getaway Package that includes 2 nights, a $50 Boston Pizza gift certificate and a $10 Mart credit for snacks, plus private access to the hotel pool. And many of Surrey’s hotels or motels are offering locals rates for family getaways.
