Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair
An Original Kind of Country
There’s a song called ‘Rodeo’ performed by Garth Brooks. In it, Brooks sings of a cowboy passionate about the rodeo, intoxicated even. He thinks about leaving, but is unable. He knows the rodeo has its risks, but his love for it is too powerful, and he’s drawn back every time by an irresistible magnetism.
For many cowboys and cowgirls, the rodeo is an old friend they grew up with. And it’s not just a sport. It’s a lifestyle that comes with adventure and a whole lot of sacrifice. There are mud stains, sore muscles, late nights and really early mornings. And it’s worth it – every bruise, every drop of sweat, every last dedicated minute.
If you’ve never had a love affair with the rodeo, then maybe it’s time to start flirting with the idea. It’s the perfect summer fling, after all. If you’ve already been to the rodeo, then you know exactly what we’re talking about.
There’s just something about the rodeo, and not only for the cowboys competing. There’s an intangible magic, an infectious atmosphere. Maybe it’s the smell of livestock that lingers in the air or the plethora of crisp hats and shiny buckles on display. Maybe it’s the barbeque, the excitement, or the undeniable sense of community. For city slickers with zero exposure to country life, it’s like stepping into a storybook.
The Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair is Canada’s most unique country fair, and it’s a big deal… in Surrey and elsewhere. Country-lovin’ folk from far and wide flock annually to experience this spectacular tradition.
The Country Fair that’s now synonymous with the Cloverdale Rodeo was first held in 1888. In 1945 the rodeo came to town and seven decades later, the two are still a match made in heaven. In fact, The Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair is arguably to best way to celebrate the May long weekend.
With over a century of history, it’s a blend of timeless charm and thrilling modern events. Experience the excitement of Canada’s second-largest rodeo, witness the world freestyle skateboarding championship, and groove to live music by top artists. From lumberjack shows to pro wrestling, there’s endless entertainment to enjoy. And don’t forget to indulge in the unique fusion of international flavours and beloved fair food.
On the Thursday before the long weekend a raucous bed race kicks off the celebrations. Then there’s the parade on the Saturday, not quite as quirky, but just as fun. Eager spectators line the streets as nearly one hundred entrants proceed proudly: clowns, floats, bands, marching units, community organizations and of course… cowboys, cowgirls and horses galore!
Never been to the Cloverdale Rodeo? Stick with us, and we’ll show you the ropes. Below is just a taste of what you’ll find this May Long Weekend, and you can download a map of the grounds and the daily schedule here.
Rodeo Events – Naturally! See the world’s top cowboys and cowgirls compete in classic rough stock rodeo events such as bareback, saddle bronc and bull riding, as well as ladies barrel racing.
Mutton Bustin’ – It’s not just the pros who get to have all the fun. Mutton Bustin’ is an activity that lets kids aged three and up experience what it’s like to be a cowboy or cowgirl. How? By hanging onto a sheep for dear life. It’s fun to do… and fun to watch!
The Bed Races – While not an official rodeo event, this well-loved tradition consists of teams of six pushing a bed on wheels with an additional team member riding the bed. Unique prizes are given to the winning male team, female team, and mixed media team. The irony? This event is the least likely to put you to sleep.
World Freestyle Round-Up Skateboard Competition – Professional and amateur skateboarders have the chance to win big, doing what they love. The winner of the competition will walk… or should we say ‘skate’ away with a prize of $17,000.
Indigenous Village – Hosted by the Waceya Metis Society and the Lower Fraser Valley Aboriginal Society, the Indigenous Village showcases the rich heritage of Indigenous peoples in Canada. Enjoy performances by First Nations artists, shop for unique products and be sure to sample the bannock.
Farm Friendz – Cow-milking demonstrations and a long list of animals to check out, makes Farm Friendz everyone’s favourite attraction.
The Midway – BC’s largest travelling Midway is for adventurous kids and kids at heart. From Friday to Saturday, the Midway is open until 11:00 pm, ensuring you have time to line up for your favourite ride that one last time. With over thirty-five rides that include Vertigo, Zero Gravity, and Super Shot, there’s a ride to thrill every amusement park lover.
Delicious Food & Drink – The food lineup is a perfect showcase of the event’s uniqueness. 2024 welcomes back favourites such as the Roundup Cookhouse & Beer Garden hosted by the Joseph Richard Group, Rib Fest, and the mouth-watering pancake breakfast supporting the Cloverdale Rodeo Youth Initiative Foundation. The country fair hosts over 50 food trucks with fare ranging from amusement park favourites to South Indian, Malaysian, Cuban and more. Headlining the libation locations is the Hops & Vines Garden which debuted in 2023. Unwind in an expanded outdoor space, and enjoy craft brews, wines and charcuterie while taking in live music.
Toe-tappin’, Thigh-slappin’ Music – Headliners, and local legends, 54-40 take the stage for a free (with general admission), all-ages, sunset concert on Sunday, May 19, and later that evening at 10:30pm Chris Buck Band take the stage at the Longhorn Saloon for a 19+ show that guarantees an upbeat, positive, homegrown country sound. The Longhorn hosts nightly ticketed entertainment and the Lordco Outdoor Stage will be buzzing with live performances all weekend long.
Tickets are available in advance starting in April each year, so mark your calendars, the Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair is one wild ride you don’t want to miss and won’t soon forget.

Surrey Canada Day
Surrey is situated on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territories of the Coast Salish Peoples, including the q̓icə̓ y̓ (Katzie), q̓wɑ:n̓ƛən̓ (Kwantlen), and Semiahma (Semiahmoo) land-based nations.
Western Canada’s biggest Canada Day festival has a lot going on! Whether you’ve got a junior Canuck, or you’ve celebrated many a Canada Day in your time, there’s a little something for everyone.
Head to Surrey’s Bill Reid Millennium Amphitheatre to experience a day full of free, family-friendly entertainment, amusement rides, exhibitor booths, an Indigenous Village, food trucks and a spectacular fireworks finale.
Arguably one of the biggest crowd-pleasers at this annual event are the amazing Canadian performers who hit the main stage throughout the day. The event is stacked with chart-topping, award-winning performers including 2023 headliners, Broken Social Scene, two-time nominees of the Polaris Music Prize, and two-time winners at the Juno Awards. Also on the bill was PIQSIQ, an Indigenous duo who happen to be sisters, performing the beautiful Inuit art of throat singing. Other highlights included fellow Juno Award winners Crown Lands, an acclaimed progressive-rock duo, and Neon Dreams, a celebrated alt-pop duo, both named Breakthrough Group of the Year in 2021 and 2020 respectively. Almost every genre of music is represented on the day, from Country, Latin, Hip Hop, R&B, South Asian, Soul and Reggae to Indigenous Dancers, the Kwel Eng Sen Dancers and Bollywood performer, Karishma Deo, no matter what genre you lean towards, your new favourite artist will be hitting the stage.
Thrill-seekers and future dare-devils will have a BLAST on the Shooting Star Amusement Rides with fan-favourites like the Zipper, Lightning Bolt, the Ferris Wheel and Kids Pirate Ship. The Kid’s Zone will delight the littles with fun musical performances, Indigenous storytelling, circus performers, games and crafts.
But, we all know that one of the best parts of any festival is the food and Surrey Canada Day doesn’t disappoint. Not only can you celebrate your Canadian pride by eating all the poutine you can handle, but there’s also a diverse selection of food to taste from around the world, like Jamaican Jerk Chicken from Jamaican Mi Juicy, hotdogs with a Japanese twist from Japa Dog, and pierogies from Hunky Bill’s. And it wouldn’t be a festival without mini doughnuts and hurricane potatoes!
Surrey Canada Day is committed to sharing music, education, entertainment, and the cultural practices of many Indigenous, local and multicultural artists. July 1 is a day to reflect on the wrongs of the past to chart a new and better path forward. Together, we can work towards reconciliation and a more equitable society for all, and everyone is invited to come together to reflect, experience diverse cultural expression, and create hope for the future.
Surrey Canada Day includes an Indigenous Village, featuring the Siam Stage, meaning “Respected Ones” in Coast Salish languages. The Siam Stage showcases Indigenous cultural sharing from the Semiahmoo First Nation, and “Sharing Circles” to learn from Indigenous educators and healers through workshops, and storytelling in a 30-foot Teepee. There is an Indigenous marketplace where you can browse and purchase from local artisans and small businesses.
The celebrations wrap up with a spectacular fireworks show at 10:15 pm.
