I get asked to write a lot of guest posts, and, truth be told, I usually say no. My free time is getting very scarce these days, but when Surrey is the subject I can’t say no.
My name is Scott Graham and I write a local food blog called whatsforlunchbc.com. I have lived in Surrey since I was nine years old, playing minor hockey and lacrosse here, and attending Frank Hurt Secondary School in Newton. I now live in Fleetwood with my wife and daughter, and our dog.
The reason I love Surrey is a constantly evolving thing, but today I was reminded of one huge reason – the people.
I was walking the Serpentine Hills trail at Tynehead Regional Park with my daughter and I exchanged a friendly greeting with every person I came across. Most of them were there for the same reason I was – it’s a great park to go for a walk, ride your bike or let your dog get some exercise. Everywhere I go in Surrey people say “hello”, which always makes me smile. It’s a small thing, but I can honestly say that it rarely happens in our neighbouring cities.
Surrey is a cultural melting pot made up of people from all over the world. Growing up here has exposed me to other cultures, cuisines, religions and points of view that allow me to see the world in a unique way. I want my daughter to experience the same diversity. It will make her a better person who understands people’s differences and celebrates them instead of being afraid of them.
I hope Surrey means as much to you as it does to me. The future looks pretty good from where I’m standing!
