Black History Month Events

One of the best things about living in, or visiting Surrey is the cultural diversity that stretches to each and every corner of the city. February is Black History Month around the world, and Surrey has several events to celebrate and share Black and African Canadian history, heritage, and culture. The events held in Surrey are all family friendly, so bring your friends and family and immerse yourself in music, culture, and great food.

African Heritage Festival
February 17, 7:00 – 9:00pm
February 18, 12:00 – 9:00pm

A colourful and international festival awaits you at Surrey City Hall. This #KidApprovedBC event features an incredibly diverse range of musical sounds including hip hop, salsa, reggae, samba, soca, afrobeat, dancehall, and so much more. Stick around for food and dancing, fashion and art displays. Tickets are $25, or $40 for both days.

2017 Black History Month With a Difference
February 23, 5:00pm

How incredible does an evening of  great poetry, storytelling, and African traditional music rich in celebration of African culture and wisdom sound? Surrey Civic Theatres is hosting a by-donation celebration filled with live drumming, dancing, and storytelling. Perfect for the whole family, attendees are encouraged to arrive early as there is general seating, and entry is by donation.

Black History Month Celebration
February 18, 1:00 – 4:00pm

This event at the Surrey Museum is family friendly, free and drop-in friendly. Filled with live dance and musical performances like Jazz piano by Dominik Heins, hip hop by Blue Team Blue, and performances by Embers Moore. Be sure to stick around for free non-alcoholic ginger beer and Jamaican patties. The Surrey Museum’s exhibits will be open during the event, so kids can venture in to the Kids Gallery, or current Disney Exhibit. Youngsters can also participate in making a freedom quilt square and an Amistad friendship bracelet.
