Tell us a bit about yourself. What is your personal connection with Surrey?

My name is Caylen, and I am the founder of Canvas Candle Company. My connection to Surrey started in 2011 when I worked for The Shops at Morgan Crossing (South Surrey) as a Marketing Coordinator and Event Manager. As I organized and led events, I really got to know the community on a personal level. During this time, I fell in love with how Surrey provides an environment for residents to make meaningful connections.

What does Canvas Candle Co. look like through your lens?

To me, Canvas Candle Company signifies connection. The brand allowed me to connect back to myself through a time of personal struggle. As the brand grew, connecting with our customers drove me to keep creating and fostering connections among others. We embrace these community-building connection points in as many ways as possible—online, in person, through events, or even hosting candle-making classes out of our location!

What is something that helped make Canvas Candle Co. a reality?

Initially, I think my background in marketing and sales helped to set a strong foundation for the brand. But I can say that the most important cornerstone has been the connection with our customers and the retailers who carry our products. They are the ones who have made Canvas Candle Company a reality! They support us endlessly and encourage us to keep creating and bringing out new products. Without them, none of this would have been possible.

Canvas Candle Co. is a unique piece of Surrey’s mosaic. How does your community influence what you do?

Our community is everything to us! We realize that without their support, this brand would not be possible. Since moving to Surrey, we have been able to be more central to all of our customers. Surrey is full of curious shoppers who love to explore, and we have been honoured to welcome so many new local customers to our business. We have also met many other local small businesses that have supported us (and we have supported them) in a truly community-focused way.

What is something people may not know about Canvas Candle Company?

We literally hand-pour every single one of our candles in our studio in Port Kells! From wicking, pouring and labelling, our small but mighty team does it all by hand. We have a small team of 6, including myself, that handles all the production, shipping, sales, customer service and marketing.”
