Central City Brewers and Distillers are an ambitious bunch. Leading the charge on BC’s craft beer craze, they are often the first to try something new (and knock it out of the park). Having dabbled in the world of spirits with a Seraph Vodka, and their Queensborough Gin, whisky is a natural progression from brewing.
As a nod to the symbiotic partnership of their distillery and brewery, Central City’s newest creation from their North Surrey distillery is the Lohin McKinnon Craft Distilled Single Malt Whisky, named after their resident brewmaster Gary Lohin and head distiller Stuart McKinnon.
Whisky has a fermentation process that’s very similar to beer, and is a spirit that the masterminds behind Central City’s award winning brews are extremely passionate about. The Lohin McKinnon Whisky, like many of Central City’s creations, is created from Canadian malted barley and BC’s pure water, and aged in sweet-wine and sherry barrels for that distinct aroma and dark fruity notes. With buttery notes and a woody texture with just a hint of green apple, this whisky pairs well with soft cheeses, sushi, and smoked salmon.
When Central City has a big new release, we often find ourselves asking ‘what’s next?’ and it appears we won’t have to wait terribly long for the answer. There are rumblings of rum in Central City’s future, and if their previous releases are any indication, it’s going to be a smash hit.
