Surrey is known as a fantastic city for getting active and exploring the great outdoors, but did you know it’s also got a pretty hopping local art scene? Not only is there an array of stunning public art on show throughout the city, but there are plenty of studios and galleries showcasing local talent, too. Get inspired by some of our favourite art galleries and studios, and if you’re feeling brave, dive in for some hands-on fun as well!
This unique a-frame art gallery has been a part of Surrey for over 50 years! The Mind and Matter Gallery is nestled amongst 100-year-old cedar trees and beautiful gardens, on the 3-acre Mikelson estate. On display, you’ll find thought-provoking wood sculptures by the late Arnold Mikelson, and displays of art from local artists including paintings, glass blowing, carvings, fibre, clay and more. The renowned Surrey Art Gallery is the second largest public art gallery in Metro Vancouver and plays host to local artists as well as international travelling exhibitions. It’s located inside the Surrey Arts Centre which is home to two amazing theatrical stages. If you prefer art that moves, then this is the place to take in a live theatre show or a dance performance! As the headquarters for the Arts Council of Surrey, there’s no shortage of incredible local art to be found at the Newton Cultural Centre. Month over month, the gallery displays art from both emerging and established artists. The exhibits planned for 2022 are diverse and thought-provoking and include collections of photography, fine art paintings, textiles, sketch work and glass fusing. (13530 – 72nd Ave)
Studio Seventy Three is a collective of artists with developmental disabilities specializing in creating both decorative and functional glassware, and wearable art through the use of molding and fusing techniques. The studio, run by Community Living Society (CLS), proudly displays and sells the work of artists, helping foster self-confidence, social development, and artist community spirit.
