Fall has arrived in Surrey and although we continue to enjoy glorious sunny days, cooler weather is coming and soon it will be time to put the flip-flops away and pull out the cosy sweaters. While it’s true that Eastern Canada tends to get all the glory when it comes to fall colours, we think that Surrey puts on a pretty impressive show as well. And there’s nothing better than a walk in the woods surrounded by a stunning tapestry of fall colours in red, gold, orange and green. (Header Photo Credit: @michikom12)

Here are some of our favourite spots:

Green Timbers Urban Forest

As one of the larger parks in Surrey, Green Timbers Urban Forest offers a diversity of habitats; wetlands, grassland meadows, marsh, and lake all nestled within a beautiful second-growth forest. Deciduous trees such as white birch, red alder, black cottonwood, pacific dogwood, and Gary oak provide the forest with a lush array of colours in the autumn months. Enjoy the expansive network of nature trails, and a stroll around the lake, and keep an eye out for delicate mushrooms which thrive in the moist autumn weather.

Sunnyside Acres Urban Forest

Ideal for a refreshing fall walk, the nature trails in Sunnyside Acres stretch about 4 kilometres through a stunning second-growth forest, home to diverse wildlife including birds, coyotes, and black-tailed deer. The trails meander over boardwalks, alongside peaceful streams, and through dense forest, offering options for all abilities—from the accessible Wally Ross trail to more rugged paths. Fall is the perfect time to visit, as vibrant vine maples put on a spectacular show, shedding their leaves in a blaze of colour. Guided tours are available.

Tynehead Regional Park

If variety is what you’re after, Tynehead Regional Park has got you covered, with an abundance of trails offering incredible sights and different terrain. Filled with wildlife and trees with changing colours, it’s a beautiful spot for photographers and nature lovers alike. For frosty walks, the Birch Grove Trail is ideal as it’s very flat, and since it’s a paved trail, it’s both stroller and wheelchair accessible. The Perimeter Trail is another paved trail that offers informative signs detailing the type of environment and habitat at Tynehead Park. Visit the Tynehead Hatchery to learn about the salmon of the Serpentine River and from October to December keep an eye out for spawning salmon.

Godwin Farm Biodiversity Preserve

Nestled in the Fleetwood neighbourhood of Surrey, the Godwin Farm Biodiversity Preserve was donated by The Godwin Family in order to preserve not only the stunning land but their family legacy. Over the years, the Godwins planted a wide variety of tree species, perfect for spotting fall colours! Nature trails loop around the park past a grove of towering Redwood trees, a charming lake and heritage orchards. The park is also a great spot for birdwatching with many different species that call the preserve home.  Please note that because of this park’s ecological importance, four-legged friends should be kept at home.

After your refreshing walk in the woods, pop into one of Surrey’s charming coffee shops and warm up with a creamy hot chocolate, chai, or a pumpkin-spiced latte. It’s a perfect way to wrap up your adventure, savour the beauty of the season and enjoy the simple pleasures.
