The Old Surrey Restaurant – One of Canada’s Best

There’s nothing we love more than good news, especially when it directly affects a member of the Food With Thought family. So, imagine our delight when we heard The Old Surrey Restaurant was recently named one of the Top 100 Best Restaurants in Canada by OpenTable Diners. The list of winners is derived from more than 275,000 reviews for approximately 1,500 restaurants submitted by OpenTable diners across the country.

“The Top 100 celebrates Canadian restaurants that provide exceptional and unforgettable dining experiences and we are proud to include The Old Surrey Restaurant on this inaugural list,” said Caroline Potter, Chief Dining Officer of OpenTable.

Of course, we weren’t surprised. The French fine-dining establishment has been ‘wowing’ diners since Valentine and Lesley Aguirre opened its doors in 1974. It was bought by their son Philip Aguirre in 2007, who continues the legacy daily in his role as executive chef.

This recent success is just another feather in his impressively-decorated cap. Aguirre has cooked for two ex-presidents, was invited to cook at the Surrey Economic Conference in Surrey, and has also cooked on stage at the Fusion Festival. Despite this, he manages to stay grounded, thankful for the community that’s supported his family for over four decades. “The Old Surrey Restaurant has been in the heart of Surrey for 41 years,” stated Aguirre, “In spite of all the recent negative incidents in Newton there is still vibrancy, passion, relationships and great food.”
