Surrey Museum ⁃ Discover your Story: We Can Help!

As part of their Museum From Home initiative, the Museum of Surrey has launched a new online exhibit entitled Discover Your Story: We Can Help! This interactive exhibit features stories discovered by ancestry researchers to inspire Surrey families to create their own family trees.

Each object in the exhibit tells the story of a family, whether it be of immigration, work, war or simply everyday life. The range of displays, including military items, old fashioned toys, historic photos and documents, musical instruments and unique handmade belongings help paint a picture of family life in Surrey.

There are seven themes in the exhibit. Each week, they will add a video of a profiled theme on their website. The first week’s theme is “Occupations and Schools”. Check the site weekly to see new highlights.

The goal of the exhibit is to inspire people of all ages to discover their own family lineage and museum staff encourage people to share their findings on Facebook and Instagram using the hashtag #MuseumOfSurrey.

“With this exhibit, we hope people will be inspired to reach out to their family members to talk about their history,” said museum manager Lynn Saffery. “The timing of this exhibit works well. Maybe we can’t come together for intimate gatherings, but we can pick up the phone or have a video chat to learn more about our heritage.”

The exhibit can be accessed through Museum of Surrey’s Facebook and Instagram accounts (@MuseumOfSurrey) or by visiting surrey.ca/museum.

The exhibit is part of the museum’s Community Treasures series and is the result of a collaboration with Surrey Family History Centre, the BC Genealogical Society and Surrey Libraries—Family History.
