Experience the unique architecture of North Surrey

Surrey is a quickly growing metropolis, and there are several architectural works of art at the heart of the city that are not only beautifully designed, but also environmentally friendly. Within easy walking distance between each other, these buildings each have both striking features and functional space.

The City Centre Library (10350 University Drive) is a multi-leveled book haven and a swirling architectural masterpiece. This library is full of natural light, curved edges, and is home to over 100,000 books. This library is LEED Gold Certified. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, and is used to rate sustainability and green standards of buildings. The library earned this certificate by taking steps during its construction to ensure the building would be green as possible, including being made with recycled materials, cutting down on how much waste from construction went to landfills, and incorporating a green roof that reduces carbon dioxide in the air. Not only is it environmentally friendly it is also visitor friendly, offering views of civic plaza, comfortable chairs, and even a cafe.

Right next to the library, across the spacious Civic Plaza, you’ll find the Surrey City Hall (13450 104 Avenue) with its living wall and large glass walls. Built in 2014, the Surrey City Hall was also awarded the LEED Gold sustainability certificate. Inside, enjoy the high ceilings and lots of natural light through walls of glass, and a hanging sculpture that you can view from multiple floors. To take advantage of all the natural light, the building has automatic lights that are light sensitive so energy is conserved and lights are only turned on when they are needed. Not only beautiful building, but one that is working towards better energy consumption.

A few blocks away is Central City (10153 King George Boulevard). This award winning architectural marvel blends together a shopping centre and the Simon Fraser University Campus and Central City business centre. With a beautifully curved glossy exterior, the Central City building creates a hub of activity. With vaulted ceilings and a large galliera inside, it doesn’t feel like an ordinary shopping mall. Large timber beams line the interior, adding a natural feel to this urban environment and making for a beautiful space where you can enjoy shopping, great dining experiences, and city views.

Surrey is growing fast. Head to North Surrey to enjoy these feats of engineering and sustainability for an environmentally friendly city in the making. The architecture of North Surrey are structures you do not want to miss.
