The August Long Weekend is coming up, so make the best of it here in Surrey! BC Day, also known as the August Long, is a holiday that lets West Coasters celebrate the beauty of this gorgeous province we live in, and we’re here to make sure you make the best of it!
August 3 at Holland Park
13428 Old Yale Rd
Movies are always better when watched late at night, and summer is best spent outdoors. So why not do both at Movies Under the Stars? Spend the evening with family and friends on a mini-picnic while watching popular kid-friendly movies like 90s favourite “Space Jam”. Bring those comfy chairs and cozy blankets, and join in on this free cinema night with the community. A new movie will be shown each Saturday in August.
Regarded as one of the best places to find fine craft beer, Central City Brewery (11411 Bridgeview Drive) is where you’ll want to go to kick back a few cold ones for the Long Weekend. Enjoy the pub’s award-winning Red Racer beer that truly waves a banner honouring Canadian craft beer, or check out their retail stores to experience their tasting room. You could also swing by both their brewery and distillery for a tour to see how their high-quality beers, ciders, and spirits are made. What’s more, knowing that they won’t compromise for less than the best will surely lift your spirits (pun intended).
A long history for the long weekend
Get a slice of what Surrey was like many decades ago by exploring the expansive Elgin Heritage Park (3723 Crescent Road), featuring unique wetland habitats and a number of historical sites. Learn about the Surrey pioneer family named the Stewarts at the quaint Historic Stewart Farm located within the park. The authentic farmhouse, salmon-bearing creek, and surrounding wildlife will give you a blast from the past. The park also has an agricultural display of vintage machinery at the Pole Barn, and a Haddon Crab Boat display in a Marine Heritage Building. In addition, the nearby Nicomekl River offers a wonderful scenic view of the water and the Wards Marina, a part of the farm since even before WWII.
With the Pacific Ocean right at our fingertips (toe tips?), water activities are essential to fully experience a Surrey summer. There are many different ways to get out on the water, whether by kayaking, paddleboarding, swimming or even boating. Beginners and advanced paddlers can visit Sea to Sky Adventure Co.’s beachfront shack at Crescent Beach, rent paddleboards and kayaks and explore the calm waters of the protected bay.
All this action and excitement for BC Day can be energy-consuming, so fuel up at Hooked Fish Bar with their staple fish and chips, a classic dish to enjoy during a day at the beach. In addition to fish and chips and burgers, Hooked also serves up plenty of surf-side delicacies such as oysters, mussels and calamari. Their fish tacos are delectable and very popular with guests. Want to feel like a pirate? Compliment your fish and chips with one of the many rum choices in Hooked Fish Bar’s collection. Watch the sun set across the Pacific Ocean as you sip a drink with friends on the patio.
