Surrey’s on the Ale Trail

South of the Fraser Ale Trail

Surrey is known for its bounty of green spaces, parks, and trails that lead to spectacular views among beautiful second growth urban forests. A true nature-lover’s paradise, there seems to be a sizeable park at any turn, no matter what neighbourhood you may find yourself in.

This trail, however, is not your typical walk in the park. There are stunning views and a LOT of adventure, but there’s an added bonus of a BC specialty: craft beer. The BC Ale Trail has been highlighting some of the best breweries in our beautiful province, and Surrey has collaborated with our neighbouring communities Richmond, Delta and White Rock  to celebrate just how well we brew it “South of the Fraser” with an Ale Trail to call our own.

Who’s brewing in Surrey? Well, we’re glad you asked!

Central City Brewers & Distillers – Central City Brewers may have started small, but they’ve always thought big. With humble roots as a small brewpub in downtown Surrey, they saw the potential of what Canadian craft beer could be, and created Red Racer craft beer, which still their anchor label today.  The idea was to create beer that honoured the traditions of the craft, using only the best ingredients.

Russell Brewing – Russell Brewing has been a leader of the craft beer movement in BC since 1995, making them one of the first 10 microbreweries in Greater Vancouver. Their journey began, and continues today, with small-batch unpasteurized “Real Beer” with all-natural ingredients.  Known for an innovative, and extensive lineup of craft beer flavours, there is bound to be a beer to appeal to all beer drinkers! Visit their new tasting room for an impressive lineup of Russell Beers available in classic flights, table flights (12 samples to share with the table), glasses and growlers.

Way Back Brew Company – The new kids on the block, Way Back Brew Company draws inspiration from 1970s and early ’80s California, infusing retro vibes into its marketing and ambiance. Think roller skates, surfboards, and the iconic Farrah Fawcett on a skateboard.  The brewery currently offers five different beers ranging from lagers to IPAs, accompanied by craft cocktails showcasing librations from Vancouver-based partner Resurrection Spirits. While a pizza kitchen is in development, the brewery ensures patrons won’t go hungry by hosting regular food trucks. Overall, Way Back Brew Co. provides a nostalgic and vibrant experience, capturing the essence of California’s retro culture in a Surrey setting.

And be sure to stop by Hawthorne Beer Market & Bistro to enjoy local craft beer on 17 rotating taps, plus gourmet pasta and pizza, great seafood, and killer burgers.

So what exactly is an Ale Trail? It’s a choose-your-own-adventure style itinerary that combines craft beer, great food, and a Surrey specialty: the great outdoors. We’ve planned the ultimate long weekend outing for those who thrive in the great outdoors and love to kick back with a locally brewed beverage.
